The Blog post with English translation

In the Hızırşah district of Datça, there is a hill called Hacetevi. An area of 70 square meters made of stones piled in an elliptical shape at an altitude of 350 meters. It has a panoramic point where you can see both the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea from a bird’s eye view. Along the way, ancient agricultural terraces, olive trees, different types of thyme, other special scented herbs and bird chirps accompany. There is a belief that if you sleep here and have a dream, it will come true. Therefore, this place is considered a sanctuary. It is used as a kind of counseling place by dreaming about any question about the future while making a decision.

Tepeye çıkmak bir buçuk saat, yavaş tempoyla iki saat alıyor. Patika toprak yol takip ediliyor.

It takes an hour and a half to climb the hill, and two hours at a slow pace. The path is followed by a dirt road. There are signs painted white, it is impossible to get lost. There is a lot of thorny plants above, it is important to wear long legs. The end of May or the summer season is hot, it would be good to set off early.

Tepeye yaklaştıkça yol gittikçe daralıyor, dikenli maki örtüsünün içinde zaman zaman yol kayboluyor gibi oluyor, böylece kayalık bölgelere varılıyor. Biraz eforlu bir yürüyüş ama çıkmaya değiyor.

As you get closer to the hill, the road gets narrower and narrower, and the road seems to disappear from time to time in the thorny scrub cover, thus reaching the rocky areas. It’s a bit of a strenuous hike, but well worth the hike.

Along the way, you may have the chance to encounter snakes, turtles, and bees that collect thyme. We saw it. Gülsiye Ermiş, who offered apricots from the tree in her garden with the warmth and hospitality of Anatolian people, gave a wonderful answer after greeting while passing by her house on the way back. When we said we saw a purple and mottled black snake crossing the road on the path, she said, “What can this animal do, it must be thirsty, it’s looking for water, it won’t do any harm.” Ms. Gülsiye has been living in the house where she came from as a bride for fifty years, and she gave us unforgettable moments with her delicious apricots and her heartfelt ‘please, I would like to prepare Turkish coffee’ invitation. She herself confirmed that the dreams seen on the hill came true. However, she stated that the pits mentioned on the hill were closed, and she told that there were seven or eight pits on the hill in her childhood, lying there and dreaming.

Bu tepe kendi başına bir rüya!

This hill is a dream in itself!

Hacetevi tepesine çıktığınızda Datça’yı kuşbakışı izlemenin genişliği içinde kalbiniz genişliyor, içine Ege’yi ve Akdeniz’i, rüzgar tribünlerini, alabildiğince geniş ovayı, etrafını saran tepeleri, ağacı, kuşu, böceği, gökleri ve rüzgârları kucaklıyorsunuz.

When you climb to Hacetevi Hill, your heart expands in the breadth of watching Datça from a bird’s eye view, you embrace both the Aegean sea and the Mediterranean sea, the wind turbines, the wide plain, the surrounding hills, the trees, the birds, the insects, the sky and the winds.

It is rumored that in the very early hours of the morning on Wednesdays, fairy-like women descend from this hill with the lights in their hands, raining light down on the town. Coincidentally, we went out the hill on Wednesday, but we were late to see the balls of light.

Tepedeki taşlı bu kutsal alana uzunca birkaç tahta koymuşlar, olur ki uzanır uyumak isterseniz..Dünyanın en güzel havadar uyuma alanlarından biri burada!

They put a few long boards in this stony sanctuary on the hill, if you want to lie down and sleep.. One of the most beautiful and airy sleeping areas in the world is here!

Etrafı izlemekten biz uyuyamadık, rüzgarların esintisi ve havanın diriliği, gökyüzüne biraz daha fazla yakın olmanın esrikliği içinde tepeden indik. Antik tarım terasları alanı içinde envai çeşit yabani ot kokuları ( kekik, adaçayı, katırtırnağı, mersin…), zeytin ağaçları ve kuş cıvıltıları arasında…

We couldn’t sleep because of looking around, we descended from the hill ecstatic with the breeze of the winds and the freshness of the air, being a little closer to the sky. In the area of ancient agricultural terraces, among the scents of all kinds of wild herbs (thyme, sage, spanish broom, common myrtle…), olive trees and bird chirping…

Capers are common in Datça region. We come across on the road  the flower which has a special beauty, the small green seeds of this flower are collected between the leaves, it is a different flavor, usually for pickling, you may like the taste:

A heather plant with its white myrtle flowers gave us its most beautiful poses:

200 dönümlük bu alanda Hızırşah Köyü Ekosistem Sürdürülebilirlik, Rehabilitasyon ve Ekoturizm Başlangıç Projesi kapsamında çevre düzenlemeleri yapılmış. Hacetevi tepesine yakın alanlara koyulmuş açıklamalar çok faydalı olmuş, katkı koyan herkese teşekkür ederiz.

In this 200-decare area, environmental arrangements were made within the scope of Hızırşah Village Ecosystem Sustainability, Rehabilitation and Ecotourism Initial Project. The explanations put in the areas close to Hacetevi Hill have been very useful and we would like to thank everyone who contributed.

There are also wishing stones in different shapes in this region. Each is used for different wishes:

‘Flowered’ stones are used for vows or wishes. As you pass in front of it, branches of myrtle, gum and thyme are inserted into its holes. If there are already inserted flowers, one is taken.

‘Hole stones’ these stones are used for the healing of sick children.

The child must be accompanied by an old woman and a young girl. / The child is passed through the hole of this stone by reading prayers 3 or 7 times. / Go down to the seaside without looking back. The cauldron brought from the house is put on the fire. With a copper pan with a handle, forty pans of water are taken from the sea and poured into the cauldron, provided that there is one pan from each sea wave. Forty pebbles are thrown into the water in the cauldron. When the water in the cauldron heats up, the child is washed and forty pebbles are poured over his head. / While the child is dressed in new clothes and the old ones are thrown into the sea, ‘Take my illness, give me my health!’ is called. / While the leftovers from the food taken away are thrown to the fish in the sea, they are blown towards the sea and say, ‘Take away our child’s disease!’ is called. Not from the way you came, but from another way, again without looking back.

–> ‘Yağ Taşı’ taşları adak yeridir.

Some stones called ‘Olive Oil Stone’ are a place of altar.

Dilek gerçekleştiğinde zeytin toplanıp sıkıldıktan sonra zeytinyağı küplere doldurulurken taşın üstüne bir şişe yağ dökülürse bereket getirir. Dönüşte arkaya bakılmaz.

When the wish comes true, olives are picked and squeezed, olive oil is filled into cubes, and a bottle of oil is poured on the stone, bringing abundance. No looking back on the way back.

As we read about these rituals, we can consider the emergence and acceptance of human experiences as the common decisions of time, a little surprising, a little skeptical, unscientific, but the truth is that there are many ways to connect with nature. In addition, these beliefs shows the traces of healing within nature. Being able to respect beliefs and owning them as a cultural heritage has a creative side to us. It also can be said that we have stepped beyond the rational and logical mind into a collective space that might allow miracles to occur.
